Staff contacted and spoke in a Zoom call with Rafi Nazarians about giving his presentation to
the current COA board. He is more than happy to do this and to remain as an active part of our
Riverside application process. Elements of the plan will also be included in our RHNA planning
update. City Planner, Mary Kopaskie-Brown, who was on the call, is our contact on the
Housing elements, and Adolfo Cruz is our overall COA staff liaison and advocate.
Director Cruz gave a brief overview of the AARP Livable Communities Network to the current
COA board during the March 15, 2021 Zoom meeting. Staff (Marnie Smith) will reach out to
Rafi with the CA AARP to check his availability for the April 19111 meeting
The City of Riverside ENVISION RIVERSIDE 2025 has included in the Strategic Priorities a
commitment to Arts, Culture and Recreation and Community Well Being.
The AARP Livable Communities Network commitment is in alignment with these strategic
priorities.
I had the pleasure to briefly be on the board of the COA in 2019. I strongly support this being
the number 1 goal for the COA. Creating, supporting, and participating in events, are important.
The COA was created to be an advocacy board for our older Riverside residents.
The Mission Statement of the board is to: "... enhance the quality of life for seniors in our
community ..." To do this we need to have a documented, City endorsed, roadmap, a guide,
to achieve this goal. This is not another layer of government. It is an embedded process for all
elected officials and staff to have in their planning and development of projects, policies, and
department procedures for the benefit all Riverside residents.
Again, I encourage the current and future members of the board to become familiar with the
AARP Network and examples of other California cities who have made this commitment.
I ask you to renew and support the COA commitment for Riverside's application to the AARP
Livable Communities Network.
Thank you again for your time and commitment to all Riverside residents as members of the
Commission on Aging board.
All the best,
Tom Donahue
tjdonahue53@att.net 1 951.203.2316
CC: City Clerk Office of the Mayor City Manager
