Date: April 11, 2021
Debbie Keller
Tony Van Vegten
Adolfo Cruz
Rafael Guzman
Al Zelinka
Patricia Lock -Dawson
Subject:
Commission on Aging (COA) Co -Chair
Commission on Aging (COA) Co -Chair
Director Riverside Parks, Recreation, & Community Service
Assistant City Manger
City Manager
Mayor
AARP — Age Friendly Livable Community for Riverside
Thank you for your time and commitment to our older Riverside residents as members of the
COA. I am a Ward 1 resident, and my current advocacy is to support neighborhoods through
the RNP riverside neighborhood partnership. My day job is with Family Service
Association as the Administrator for our Senior Nutrition Meals Program in Riverside and San
Bernardino Counties.
I encourage the current and future members of the board to become familiar with the AARP
Network and examples of other California cities who have made this commitment.
My request to you is to renew the COA commitment for Riverside's application to join the
AARP Livable Communities Network.
In 2019 the Commission on Aging reviewed a proposal by members of the board to support an
advocacy position for Riverside residents by joining the AARP Age Friendly Livable
Communities Network .
A presentation was made to the COA board by the Associate State Director of the AARP,
Rafi Nazarians.
This position was approved by the board and in February of 2020 was committed to, by
Mayor Rusty Bailey and the City Manager, Al Zelinka.
In February 2021, this initiative was highlighted in the annual COA report being prepared for
presentation to the current COA board for a future update to the Riverside City Council.
This meeting unfortunately was cancelled.
In following up with City Manager Zelinka, we receive assurance that the AARP Livable
Communities Network application would be supported and completed by staff, the COA, and
community partners and included in the upcoming General Plan update to begin later this year,
