HUMAN RESOURCES BOARD Meeting Minutes Monday, May 04, 2015 Opening: The regular meeting of the Human Resources Board was called to order at 4:02 p.m. on Monday, May 04, 2015 in the City Hall Art Pick Council Chamber by Chair Sonya Dew. Present: Elvira DeCuir Lawrence Conn Norman Powell Rafael Elizalde Sonya Dew Tricia Eibs Colene Torres Brenda Diederichs Gregg Gu Guests: Excused Absence: Alysia Webb Michael Moore, Fire Chief Karen Logue, Deputy Human Resources Director Pia Rose, Deputy Human Resources Director Natalie Velez, Office Specialist Public Comment Period: • Jason Hunter addressed the Board. A. Approval of March 02, 2015 Minutes Approved: Norman Powell Second: Tricia Eibs Ayes: All B. Agenda Items Unexcused Absence: Departmental Presentation — Michael Moore, Fire Chief • Fire Chief Michael Moore provided the Board with a PowerPoint presentation overview of the Fire Department. This included an overview of the department's retention /turnover rate, current workforce, EEO breakdown and sick leave usage. • Chief Moore informed the Board of the department's Fire Explorer Program intended for youth between the ages of 14 -21 who are interested in a fire service career. • Chair Sonya Dew asked Chief Moore what percentage of students graduate from the Fire Explorer Program and continues on in a fire service career. Chief Moore responded and indicated that fifty percent of students remain in fire service. • Board Member Tricia Eibs inquired as to what type of activities are involved with the Fire Explorer Program. Chief Moore responded and indicated that students are expected to assist at events such as the Festival of Lights, roll hoses and participate in ride alongs. Mr. Moore indicated that each participant must also maintain a "C" average at school. Page 1 of 2
