<br />Mayor’s Commission on Aging (MCOA) <br />Minutes <br />Tuesday, October 14, 2014, 4 p.m. <br />Janet Goeske Senior Center <br /> 5257 Sierra Street <br /> Riverside, CA 92504 <br /> <br />The mission of the Riverside Mayor’s Commission on Aging is to enhance the quality of life for seniors <br />in our community. We study local senior issues to learn about current programs, define future needs, <br />and reference best practices. We then make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council on ways <br />we think the City of Riverside can maintain and improve its status as a Senior-Friendly Community. <br /> <br /> I. Swearing-in of Commissioner for Ward 7 <br /> Assistant City Clerk Sherry Morton administered the oath of office to new Ward 7 <br />Commissioner Gloria Mattson Huerta. She was welcomed by all. <br /> <br /> II. Call to Order, Pledge of Allegiance & Introductions <br />The meeting was called to order at 4:06 p.m. by Chair Leonard Doup; a quorum was present. <br />Pledge of Allegiance was recited. <br /> <br />Members Present: Julie Brown-Tartaglino, Jeannie Darnell, Leonard Doup, Bud Fish, Gloria <br />Mattson Huerta, Marie Leggette, Cyndi Pardee, Madeline Pruett, Sandra Tarmo, and Irene <br />Weir. <br /> <br /> Members Absent: None. <br /> <br />Others Present: Jetta Hice – Mayor’s Staff, Sherry Morton – Asst City Clerk, and Nancy <br />Castillo – RPD. <br /> <br /> III. Approval of Minutes <br /> Minutes from the September 9, 2014 meeting were reviewed and approved as presented. <br /> <br /> IV. Announcements from Commission Members <br />None. <br /> <br /> V. Update Reports <br />A.Senior Citizen Day (SCD) – Irene Weir reported ongoing progress in the planning of the <br /> <br />2015 Senior Citizen Day activities. Dawn Pia with Parks & Rec will again plan luncheons at <br />both Senior Centers, as well as a concert in White Park. One idea discussed with Pia is to <br />have the Senior Awards Ceremony at White Park prior to the concert. Weir also met with <br />Stephanie Harvey, the City Marketing Director. Marketing will be providing extensive <br />support for that day. A meeting was held with Mary Sheets from the Mary S. Roberts Pet <br />Adoption Center and they are very excited to have a special adoption event for SCD <br />during which Seniors can adopt “senior” animals without adoption fees. Judith Vails at the <br />Goeske Senior Center will be organizing a Senior Travel Fair. Weir will also be speaking <br />with the AARP Board and the Blood Bank about possible participation. <br /> <br /> B. Senior Resource Guide – Sandra Tarmo and Cyndi Pardee met with the Abbouds <br /> regarding their requests of the Commission. Their Senior Guide is in production. Jetta <br /> Hice reported she discussed the Parks & Rec’s Senior Guide with Dawn Pia and asked if <br /> the Commission’s support of the Abbouds’ Guide would be a conflict with their production. <br />
