Mayor’s Commission on Aging – March 11, 2014
Minutes – Page Two

happy to come to a MCOA meeting to discuss that possibility. Weir also noted
the Riverside County Office on Aging works mostly online and do not produce a
comprehensive guide. What about a commercial on Gov TV and/or an ad in the
Parks, Recreation and Community Services 55+ Magazine? Dawn Pia will be
asked to attend the April MCOA meeting.

2. Determination of MCOA “Target Audience” Update – Pardee reminded that the
people who have responded to past surveys do not need assistance from the
MCOA; however, there are groups of seniors (i.e., the homebound) who may
need assistance, but it is difficult to reach them. At the February MCOA meeting
Commissioners were tasked with contacting faith institutions in their respective
Wards to ask for assistance identifying issues impacting seniors. Some
concerns revolved around Code Enforcement citations for lawn conditions and
the church staffs said they were responding to those when called; however, the
would be willing to be part of a larger group. Pardee also reported on Village to
Village (vtvnetwork.org) which is a group formed to create ways for seniors to
age at home. She volunteered to pay for a six month trial membership in order to
become familiar with their projects.

3. Senior Corps – Don Coon reported he has been working with Riverside Police
Chief Sergio Diaz regarding possible funding to cover fingerprinting for
volunteers, and tutoring services for school children. He recommended MCOA
Commissioners contact AARP to make a presentation about MCOA projects, and
possible funding, at one of their regular meetings (first Saturday of each month
at the Goeske Senior Center, 9:00 am Social Hour, 10:00 am Program). Coon
also noted community concerns about Alzheimer’s sufferers getting lost. Hice
was asked to invite Chief Dias to attend a future MCOA meeting to speak about
Silver Alert.

V. Discussion Items
1. Possible MCOA Contest Sponsorship – Discussion postponed until April MCOA
meeting.

VI. Action Items
None.

VII. Public Comments
1. Rich Gardner reported the Riverside County Office on Aging will be making a
presentation to the Riverside City Council regarding their senior programs at 2:00
pm on April 1. He strongly suggested the County Office on Aging and the MCOA
work together to improve the Ombudsman Program because he believes
conditions in many facilities are terrible. Gardner further commented he would
love to see a “gray belt” in Riverside; a location where all senior services could
be housed together.
