A report of the Recreation and Education Committee of the Council, relative to the proposed
continuance in the Municinal Auditorium and Soldiers' Memorial Building of the Hi-Nate dances and
other activities snonsored and carried on by the City Recreation Department, as heretofore petitioned
for by Bette Cotton, and others, was made at this time, the Committee reporting that, in the opinion
of its members; jurisdiction over the said building rests with the Memorial Auditorium Board, and that
the matter of its use is of no direct concern to the Council. However, it was ascertained by the
Committee that some damage had been caused to the premises by the teen-age group which would indicate
the need for more adequate sunervision, and might possibly suggest that such dances should be held
elsewhere. Moreover, it was felt by the Committee that the dances in question should be self-sustaining,
a feature which could be accomplished, it was suggested, by levying a nominal attendance charge,
possibly of not more than 10¢ ner person per dance; and upon motion of Councilman Allbright, seconded
by Councilman Dales, the report of the Committee was accented.
