Cit 4 1 : 41 11 1 . 5 City Council Memorandum
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: MAYOR LOVERIDGE
DATE: August 9, 2011
ITEM NO: 36
WARD: ALL
SUBJECT: SELECTION OF EXECUTIVE SEARCH FIRM TO CONDUCT CITY
MANAGER RECRUITMENT
ISSUE:
To select an executive search firm to conduct the City Manager recruitment.
RECOMMENDATIONS
That the City Council approve contracting with Roberts Consulting Group, Inc. for an amount of
$30,000 for professional fees and expenses.
BACKGROUND
I requested that staff prepare and issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking bids from qualified
firms. The RFP was proactively sent to fifteen (15) firms well known in the industry. In addition, the
RFP was posted on the City's website. A total of six (6) responses were received, and upon review
by the Mayor, Mayor -Tem, and Councilwoman Hart the responses were narrowed down based on
the depth and breadth of experience of the firms with successful City Manager placements for
municipalities of similar size to Riverside. On August 1, 2011, we interviewed the two (2) finalists
and Roberts Consulting Group, Inc. was selected to conduct the search and selection process.
The City Manager selection process will include a number of public community meetings to obtain
input on what qualities the community would like to see in the new City Manager. An on -line
questionnaire will allow for those who cannot attend the meeting an opportunity to still provide input.
It is anticipated that the recruitment process will take approximately six months.
FISCAL IMPACT
The cost for professional services and expenses shall not exceed $30,000 and will be funded out of
existing Council approved appropriations from the City Manager's Office budget.
36 -1
