People Serving <br />PeoFle <br /> <br />CITY OF RIVERSIDE <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />~verside <br /> <br />HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL <br /> <br />DATE: December 1, 1998 <br /> <br />ITEM NO: ~o <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />ACCEPTANCE OF GRANT FUNDS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, <br />SAN FRANCISCO FOR THE ACTIVE AGING SENIOR - SUPPLEMENTAL <br />APPROPRIATION <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br /> <br />The City of Riverside Park and Recreation Department has been awarded a grant from the University of <br />California, San Francisco, on behalf of the California Department of Health Services for the Active Aging <br />Community. Funds will be appropriated for Fiscal Year 98/99 in the amount of $5,000, and an additional <br />$10,000 in Fiscal Year 99/2000. The funds will be used to provide a physical activity program, and to promote <br />fitness using educational materials and instruction, so that exercise will be incorporated into the daily lives of <br />our participants. The program will be known as the Walking Club, and will be conveniently located at various <br />community centers for the senior residents of Riverside. Walking Club programs are being formed throughout <br />the United States, and have proven to be very popular and beneficial both physically and emotionally for those <br />who participate. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT: <br /> <br />There will be no direct fiscal impact to the General Fund. The use of existing staff for the program will suffice <br />for the in-kind services required for the match. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES: <br /> <br />Do not accept the grant award and forfeit funding for the Walking Club program for the seniors of the City <br />of Riverside. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br /> <br />That the City Council: <br /> <br />1. Authorize the Finance Department to accept the award of $15,000 to appropriate revenue account, and <br /> appropriate to grant expenditure account as established by the Finance Department. <br /> <br /> Authorize the City Manager or his designee to execute all necessary documents. <br /> <br />10-1 <br /> <br /> <br />
