Like many older buildings, the old Sears building is part of the heritage of our built environment. it is part of our history just as the Mission Inn, the Fox theater, etc. We are asking to preserve the architecture and craftsmanship of another era to be reused as something else. Certainly no one wants the building to remain empty but adaptive reuse is a viable option for all buildings. Anything planned for that site would be a soulless blob. It will be a non-descript architecture that will maximize a short- term profit for the developer while sticking the residents of Riverside with all of the associated problems Of crowded streets, crowded schools, and bring down the neighborhood. The developer doesn't live here - he won't have to live with those issues. Should the site be used for something? Of course but let's put the "innovation" part of this city's "mission statement" to work and be innovative about it instead of just caving to yet another outside developer who doesn't give a <crap> about this city. We need healthier restaurants, parks, or a community center that brings the neighborhood up not down. Lets be innovative and move Riverside forward.
