This historic action will establish the new ward boundary plan in Riverside that was approved
on May 23rd by affirmative vote (5-2).
Here we are — almost a year of diligent work by community leaders and the City ReSHAPE "Dream Team" to
establish fair and equitable ward boundaries in Riverside. This exemplary collaboration achieved historic
benefits! For the first time ever, the boundaries kept more Communities -of Interest intact with
Majority/Minority constituency in our own Ward Six, in addition to wards One, Five, and Seven.
I appreciate your support of the Community -and -City -led redistricting process which included sending us
newsletter announcements of community redistricting meetings.
Kudos and commendations to the Brown and Black Coalition for their extensive community outreach
throughout the city. These outstanding community volunteers invested countless hours to meet with residents
and discuss the proposed maps and explain the implications of the ward boundaries. They reached out by
canvassing the neighborhoods, making phone calls and sending text messages and emails, and holding
conversations with community members and groups.
The exemplary Riverside outreach process was community -driven as to Communities -of -Interest Input. The
Brown and Black Coalition gathered input from All Councilmembers, the demographers, City staff, City
Attorney and various community groups throughout Riverside. I also appreciate their consultations with
MALDEF for expert legal advice pertaining to the Fair Maps Act. Again, thank you.
Warm Regards,
Frances J.
