Riverside's Model Deaf Community 4,
Riverside City Hall —3900 Main Street 7th floor
The office of the Mayor
(fly OF
t`t
\ t.lZ,,`)(I)t: Riverside, California 92522
November 3,2021
Hello,
I recently had a lot of thoughts about Thursday's meeting. It was horrible, I have to admit. The members
were "suckerpunched"and very upset about canceling the meeting at the very last minute. Also, how the
ground floor security approached our members when they walked in.
We had invested thousands of hours over 22 years with the city and the Model Deaf Community in many
ways-communication, building relationships, helping thrive, implementing, networking, safety, and many
more. The members felt betrayed on how this has turned into an extremely negative experience from the
current Lock-Dawson administration.
The members came at me with a mix of questions-We felt brushed-off. Are we a burden to you? What have
we done to them? As I approached the members in a mediating mode, I told them NO!,They do not. They
are new. They are in hand-off transition but are faltering. We will work closely together for better
communication and planning for the future.
It is not easy because these members are very sensitive. These members had gone through brutal
discrimination, defamation, neglect, and degrading times over and over in their lives. They had poured their
heart out for the Model Deaf Community because more Deaf citizens have been moving to our beautiful city,
Riverside and they contributed their time in voluntary ways.
We want to remain in good practice with the City of Riverside-Brown Act training, legistar system (meeting
dates, video link, agenda link, minutes link) Riverside TV, and ASL Interpreters for what we had been doing
for years, but better.
We would like to set up a meeting with you, Caleb, Phillip, Lisa, Donesia to go through what MDC shall be
and transform to Commission of the Deaf.
We would like to set forth on who is responsible for:
1-ASL Interpreter requests: array from different department appointments to MDC meetings
2-Riverside TV requests:
3-Legistar procedures:
4- Mid-month meetings for new agenda
Shall we meet November 9th or 10th? I know November 11th is Veterans day
We look forward to meeting you.
Mike Anderson,
Chair for Model Deaf Community of Riverside
Lisa Price
Vice Chair for Model Deaf Community of Riverside
