CiTY OF RIVERSIDE <br /> CITY COUNClL MEMORANDUM IIII. <br />People Serving ~v~ <br />People <br /> <br />HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL DATE: March i6, 2004 <br /> <br /> ITEM NO: 24 <br /> <br />SUBJECT: HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION EX-OFFICIO STUDENT MEMBERS <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br />On January 12, 2004, the Governmental Affairs Committee considered the recommendations <br />of the Human Relations Commission regarding the appointment of two ex-officio student <br />representatives. The following was presented as selection criteria: <br /> <br /> Resides within the Riverside city limits <br />- Strong verbal communication skills <br /> Maintains contact and communication with a diverse network of peers <br /> Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of pressures faced by youth <br /> Demonstrated experience or interest in problem solving challenges faced by youth <br />- Experience in a class or club resolving multicultural issues is recommended <br /> <br />The Human Relations Commission also recommended the following guidelines for selection: <br />Both Alvord and Riverside Unified School Distdct Superintendents would nominate one student <br />from each of the distdct high schools. The Mayor's Nominating and Screening Committee will <br />interview qualified nominees, and make the final appointment to serve on the Human Relations <br />Commission. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT: <br />There are no fiscal impacts as a result of this recommendation. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES: <br />Modify the criteria presented by the Human Relations Commission and approved by the Governmental <br />Affairs Committee. <br /> <br />COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS: <br />Staff presented this item to the Governmental Affairs Committee on January 12, 2004. Two <br />Committee members, Ameal Moore and Joy Defenbaugh, were present and approved the <br />criteda modifying the full City Council to interview the nominations and make final appointment <br />to the Human Relations Commission. In addition, the Governmental Affairs Committee asked <br />that the private schools be included in the process. The Committee voted to approve the <br />recommendations as amended and move this item forward for consideration by City Council. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATIONS: <br /> <br />That the City Council approve the selection criteria for ex-officio student <br />representation to the Human Relations Commission as recommended by <br />Governmental Affairs Committee. 24-1 <br /> <br /> <br />
