1 ORDINANCE NO. 6045 <br /> 2 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, <br /> AMENDING TITLE 6 OF THE RIVERSIDE MUNICIPAL CODE <br /> 3 BY ADDING THERETO A NEW CHAPTER 6.25 PROHIBITING <br /> THE SALE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS FROM VENDING MACHINES. <br /> 5 The City Council of the City of Riverside, California, <br /> 6 does ordain as follows: <br /> 7 Section 1: Title 6 of the Riverside Municipal Code is <br /> 8 hereby amended by adding thereto a new Chapter 6.25 prohibiting <br /> 9 the sale of tobacco products from vending machines, which <br /> 10 Chapter 6.25 shall read as follows: <br /> 11 "CHAPTER 6.25 <br /> 12 PROHIBITION OF TOBACCO VENDING MACHINES <br /> 13 Sections: <br /> 6.25.010 Findings and Purpose. <br /> 14 6.25.020 Definitions. <br /> 6.25.030 Tobacco Vending Machines Prohibited. <br /> 15 <br /> 6.25.010 FINDINGS AND PURPOSE. The City Council <br /> 16 does hereby find that: <br /> 17 (a) Smoking is responsible for the premature <br /> deaths of 434,000 Americans each year from lung cancer, <br /> 18 heart disease, respiratory illness, and other diseases; <br /> secondhand smoke is responsible for an additional 53,000 <br /> 19 deaths among nonsmokers; and <br /> (b) The U.S. Surgeon General has declared that <br /> 20 nicotine is as addictive as cocaine or heroin; no other <br /> addictive product or drug or cancer-causing product or <br /> 21 drug is sold through vending machines; and <br /> (c) The U.S. Secretary of Health, the U.S. <br /> 22 Surgeon General, and the leading voluntary health <br /> organizations all recommend the elimination of cigarette <br /> 23 vending machines for health reasons; <br /> (d) Accordingly, the City Council finds that <br /> 24 prohibiting the sale of cigarettes through vending <br /> machines is essential to protect the health and welfare <br /> 25 of the public. <br /> 26 6.25.020 DEFINITIONS. <br /> 27 (a) "Tobacco Vending Machine" means any machine or <br /> <br />ATTORNEY <br /> DE <br />FORNIA <br /> <br /> <br />
