figures. <br />Staff is needed to oversee this type of program. It is not <br />unusual for large cities to have an Urban Forestry staff. A <br />proposal has been submitted to the City Manager to use salary <br />savings to pay for this position. <br />ACTION: <br />Consider the following proposals during budget review: <br />1. The 1989 tree inventory showed a tree value of <br />$400,000,000. Contract trimming minimum is $250,000. <br />2. Show where the City can save money - would be a good <br />selling point. <br />3. Budgets for tree trimming contained in Public Works and <br />Public Utilities could be rolled into Parks and <br />Recreation to better optimize service and more <br />successfully manage an Urban Forestry program. <br />4. Trees too costly in maintenance could be replaced with <br />more appropriate species. <br />5. As a compromise, 10% of the trees could be experimented <br />with to see how they do. This way, we could avoid <br />problems like we had with the Shamel Ash, which can be <br />used only in certain areas. <br />
