The academy
started on Sunday morning, August 11th and went through Saturday afternoon, August
17th. A total of 125 Explorers from numerous agencies across California attended this
once a year event. Of the 125, the Riverside Police Department sent 7 Explorers
through the basic and advanced academy classes.

This academy is a one-week training program designed to assist teenagers who hope to
have a career in Law Enforcement. The Explorers are required to spend the night during
the weeklong live-in academy and are exposed to a military style training environment.
This training emphasizes the importance of teamwork as the Explorers are exposed to
Academics, Practical Scenario's, Physical Training, Firearms Familiarization and much

more.

On the final day of the academy, all 7 RPD Explorers received certificates of
completion at the graduation ceremony held inside of the Landis Auditorium at the RCC
Campus. In addition to the certificates of completion, Explorer Patrick Chasse received
an award for being the class "Guide-on". The Guide-on is selected by the Tactical Staff
during the academy and is considered the leader of the 90 plus Explorers in the basic
academy class. Explorer Juan Villa also received an award for being a "Team Leader"
during the basic class. Explorer Samantha Buckwald, along with her Explorer partner
from another agency, received an award for their handling of a scenario involving a
"Mentally Disturbed Subject". Explorer Kristopher Hargis, along with his Explorer
partner from another agency, received an award for their handling of a scenario
involving an "Unknown Traffic Stop". Explorer Stephen Balisky was the only RPD
Explorer who participated in the Advanced Academy Class, which had a total of 30
Explorers. Explorer Balisky received awards for "Outstanding Marksmanship and
Time" during the Firearms training course. He also received an award for "Outstanding
Time" during the Bicycle Patrol Obstacle Course.

In all, all seven RPD Explorers did an outstanding job, not only in their performance at
the academy, but by representing the City of Riverside as well. Most teenagers their age
don't get involved in volunteer work when they are not in school, not to mention during
their summer vacation. But these young men and women are just a few of over 30 RPD
Explorers who unselfishly volunteer their time and efforts on an on-going basis to serve
the community they live in and prepare for their future at the same time!

For more information on the Riverside Police Department's Explorer Post, please call
(909) 351-6159.

11-1
