<br />Commission on Aging - Minutes <br />Tuesday, May 9, 2017 <br />4:00 – 5:30 PM <br />Bordwell Park – Stratton Center, 2008 Martin Luther King Blvd. Riverside 92507 <br /> <br />Call to Order: 4:02 PM <br />Pledge of Allegiance: <br />Guest Introductions: <br />Public Comment: <br />Don Coon <br />: discussed the volunteer program and the need for tutors. Also, shared that <br />the Family Service Association – mobile fresh produce van and the need for volunteers <br />to assist in distributing produce/vegetables. Promoted Meals on Wheels (meals for our <br />seniors and the need for volunteers). <br />Cheryl Tavaglione, Julie Brown-Tartaglino, Sandy R. <br />Commissioners in attendance: <br />Tarmo, Bud Fish, Shari L. Fleishman, Vicki L. Broach, Krista R. Dixon and Wilma <br />C. VanGundy, Frank E. Whatley and Michelle C. Hesse. <br /> <br />Item # 3: <br />Cassandra Jones with the Deana Foundation discussed the foundation and how it <br />serves families who are affected with Alzheimer’s and related Dementias. This <br />foundation was created in 2015 and has already awarded 3 grants to families in need. <br />Cassandra shared her personal struggles as her mother was diagnosed at the early age <br />of 50 with Alzheimer’s. <br />This non-profit is presenting a Memory Masquerade Gala on Saturday, June 24, 2017 <br />from 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm at Dales Senior Center. <br /> <br />CHP presentation: <br />Officer Olivas with the CHP (Riverside station) provided a quick overview of the CHP’s <br />Age Well, Drive Smart Program for older drivers. The CHP is focused on keeping older <br />drivers safe…they are committed to providing information/resources to ensure senior <br />drivers have the necessary tools to be safe drivers. <br />It is estimated that by 2020 there will be 4.0 million drivers on the road, who will be over <br />65 years of age. This program wants to educate seniors to be safer drivers. <br />This program is available to all senior drivers in California. <br /> <br /> <br />
