Commission on Aging - Minutes Tuesday, April 11, 2017 4:00 – 5:30 PM Dales Senior Center, 3936 Chestnut Street Riverside 92501 Call to Order: 4:05 PM Pledge of Allegiance: Guest Introductions: Public Comment: Bill Abboud: Shared the Senior Guide publication and that his radio show (discussing senior issues, resources) has been increased to 1 hour. Jessica Hodgeson: (Alzheimer’s Regional Director) – introduced herself to the group. Don Coon : discussed the volunteer program and the need for tutors. Also, shared that the Family Service Association – mobile fresh produce van and the need for volunteers to assist in distributing produce/vegetables. Promoted Meals on Wheels (meals for our seniors and the need for volunteers). Cheryl Tavaglione, Julie Brown-Tartaglino, Sandy R. Commissioners in attendance: Tarmo, Bud Fish, Shari L. Fleishman, Vicki L. Broach, Krista R. Dixon and Wilma C. VanGundy. stnd Approval of Minutes: Bud Fish 1 followed by Vicki L. Broach 2 Commissioners Absent : Frank E. Whatley and Michelle C. Hesse Discussion item #3: Ron Profeta (Parks Staff) shared that a transit fare increase was needed. The last fare increase was eleven years ago. In order to continue to be eligible to receive transportation funds, the Transportation Development Act of1971 requires the program to recover 10% of its operating costs through fares. The program has been able to achieve its mandatory farebox ratio of 10% or more over in the years since the last fare increase in 2006 but that has become increasingly difficult to maintain with the rise in operating costs and meeting demand for the service. Ridership continues to increase and the need for this increase is greater than ever. Krista Dixon: asked the question whether this increase would allow the city to hire more staff.
