REBUTTAL ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF MEASURE A Don't be misled about the faulty claims by those who want to keep the status quo! Traditional public safety efforts are not working — we need to use every tool available to us. Neighborhood livability and the public's safety are the number one priority of your City government. All Councilmembers, the Mayor, our Police Chief and City Executive Management are tasked with this goal. Many cities use local neighborhood prosecutors to proactively address crimes that affect us all. All have reported huge success - many for decades. These crimes include: aggressive panhandling, vandalism, theft, lewd conduct, and prostitution. These crimes have increased over the last three years, and are crimes your City Prosecutor would tackle. Neighborhood prosecution focuses strictly on livability issues and involves a long -term problem solving approach between law enforcement, the City Prosecutor, homeowner associations, neighborhood and business groups. Our District Attorney's office does not do this! The cost for this plan is about 2% of our entire police department budget and just 0.2% of the City's overall budget. We strongly believe this is a necessary investment for the enhanced safety and livability of our community. Neighborhood prosecution works toward stopping crime before it happens, rather than reacting to a crime after it happens. This plan reaches your neighborhood. This plan saves taxpayers dollars. It's not about jail time and fines — it's about results! Solving problems before they result in criminal prosecution. The most important role of government is to protect you and your property.
