ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF MEASURE A THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL PLACED MEASURE A ON THE BALLOT TO REDUCE CRIME IN RIVERSIDE, AND IT IS SUPPORTED BY POLICE CHIEF SERGIO DIAZ AND CRIME VICTIMS. As elected officials, we may not always agree on every issue. But we have come together in support of Measure A because it will: • Improve public safety. • Assign prosecutors into neighborhood police stations and community centers to ensure that they understand and can address the unique needs of our individual neighborhoods. • Add specialized prosecutors to combat crimes that are a priority to community concerns. As reports of increased crime rates continue to make headlines, Riverside needs an enhanced approach to crime prevention. Measure A would assign city prosecutors to neighborhood prosecution; crime victim assistance; and mental health, drug, veterans, and homeless court programs. Riverside would join cities such as Anaheim, Pasadena, and San Diego that have successfully used City Prosecutors to work closely with their local police officers and county prosecutors to find innovative and creative means of combatting crime. Measure A is a sensible approach to crime prevention. It focuses City resources on combatting community misdemeanors while allowing the District Attorney to focus on more violent crimes such as murders and rapes during a time in which his office remains understaffed and underfunded. It's a win - win for neighborhoods and crime victims.
