CULTURAL HERITAGE BOARD
MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20,2016,3:30 P.M.
ART PICK COUNCIL CHAMBERS, CITY HALL
3900 MAIN STREET
WARDS
area of city). Concern with placing a modern building where there was an
historic building for 50 years.
There hasn't been sufficient examination of ways to make this important
area of the City more context complimentary.
Can the material be sculpted (at the factory) at the top cornice, echoing
back to an earlier time.
The corner at 10th and Market Streets, where the roof line is currently
elevated, if by using the same material somehow to manipulate the
material which may provide minor relief and may solve some of the
problems without excess of cost. Look at the new culinary center and the
justice center, the materials used and how those buildings complement
each other.
The Culinary Center did a good job of continuing the line of the Social
Justice Center across the side of their building and differentiating the
materials above and below that. Maybe something to consider.
Concern with the proposed Chow Alley and its efforts to open up Market.
How will this proposal and other projects tie in with its surroundings so that
it is not an after thought.
Obtaining a better idea of what was really there originally would help.
This is an important corner and they want to see something happen there.
Change structure to make more balanced, carve in some additional
symmetry, add architectural elements compatible with the style but take it
up a notch. The bulk of the building as it is, but essentially not only undoing
what was done but improving it and at the same time make the two
buildings blend by making the fewest but most significant changes.
MISCELLANEOUS PLANNING AND ZONING ITEMS
BRIEF REPORT FROM THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICER ON
RECENT CITY COUNCIL ACTIONS AND MAJOR DEVELOPMENT
PROJECTS
Erin Gettis, Historic Preservation Officer, stated she wanted had to
introduce the new City Planner, Ted White to the Board, unfortunately he
L V
E A
C N
H
W
A
R
T
1 2
Cultural Heritage
Board Members
C V V V P G
U A A A E I
E C C C S L
V A A A T L
I A N N N ° E
S T T T N E
C C
H E
A
V
E
z
3 4 5 6 7 W C W
Approved - Cultural Heritage Board Minutes — January 20, 2016 Page 2 of 3
