WATER I E N E K 5 Y LIFE
RIVERSIDE PUBLIC UTILITIES
61& Board Memorandum
P U B L I C U T I L I T I E S
BOARD OF PUBLIC UTILITIES DATE: February 5, 2010
ITEM NO: 11
SUBJECT: FIELD TO OFFICE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
ISSUE:
To encourage career development and support succession planning, Riverside Public Utilities (RPU)
proposes an internship program for field employees who are completing degree programs.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of Public Utilities approve, and recommend that the City Council approve the establishment of
the Field to Office Administrative Internship Program within Riverside Public Utilities.
BACKGROUND:
The Field to Office Administrative Internship Program is designed to expose interested non -probationary field
employees to administrative office assignments through an internship program. Program participants will be
exposed to various aspects of RPU operations by working in specific areas within RPU. The area(s) of
internship shall be at the discretion of the RPU General Manager. Successful candidates will obtain work
experience in Energy Delivery, Water Engineering, and/or Water/Power Resources for a six (6) month period
of time. This period can be extended by an additional six (6) months, with the approval of the RPU General
Manager based upon operational or business needs. Conversely, the length of the program period may be
shortened based upon similar circumstances.
This further gives employees the opportunity to gain an understanding of business and engineering activities
of the Utility which will help them in career planning and development, and offers them administrative work
experience at the professional level that complements their education. It also increases the effectiveness of
the overall Utility by bringing field experience into office operations.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact as participants will already be employed within RPU.
Prepared and Approved by: David H. Wright, Public Utilities General Manager
Approved by: Belinda J. Graham, Assistant City Manager
Approved as to form: Gregory P. Priamos, City Attorney
