WA'rER I ENERGY LIFE
RIVERSIDE PUBLIC UTILITIES
Board Memorandum
P U B L I C U T I L I T I E S
BOARD OF PUBLIC UTILITIES DATE: January 15, 2010
ITEM NO: 6
SUBJECT: LINDEN 72-INCH METER AND VAULT
ISSUE:
Consideration of a capital expenditure of$115,000 for the installation of the Linden 72-inch meter vault.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of Public Utilities approve the capital expenditure of$115,000 for Work Order No. 1009036,
which is for the procurement and installation of the Linden 72-inch meter vault.
BACKGROUND:
Water Operations and Field Forces purchased and installed a temporary water meter for the 72-inch pipeline
near Linden Booster Station. Located at the confluence of Riverside Public Utilities' (RPU)water supply, this
meter was needed to help calibrate the water model. It has been determined that there is value in making
this meter permanent to assist with the ongoing monitoring of RPU's production meters and the continuing
calibration of the water model. This can be done by housing the meter in a nine foot by twelve foot vault.
Due to the size and the weight of the vault needed to house the meter, portions of this work will be
contracted out. City forces will install the meter on the pipeline. Excavation for the vault - which is
approximately 20 feet deep, and construction of the vault foundation, and backfill around the vault will be
performed by a contractor, to be procured through the Water Utility Contractor's Panel. The contractor and
vault vendor will set the vault. Instrumentation and connection to the City's SCADA system will be performed
by City staff.
The estimated project cost is $115,000.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The total project cost is estimated at $115,000, and detailed in the table below:
Item Cost
Purchase vault and riser from Jensen Precast $24,660
Trench shoring —estimated $15,000
City Forces —estimated $36,000
Construction Contract (Contractor's Panel) - estimated $35,000
Contingencies $4,340
Total $115,000
Funds are budgeted and available in Public Utilities' Water Facility Rehabilitation Account No. 6230000-
470803.
