T r
BOARD OF PUBLIC UTILITIES DATE: January 21, 2011
ITEM NO: 3
SUBJECT: CONDUIT AND STRUCTURES INSTALLATION AT PINE STREET AND
HOUGHTON AVENUE DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL CABLE FAILURE - WORK
ORDER NO. 1104040
ISSUE:
Board of Public Utilities approval is requested for Work Order No. 1104040.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
That the Boars} of Public Utilities:
1. Approve the estimated capital expenditure of $160,000 for Work Order No.1104040 to replace
failed high voltage cable, and with new cables, conduits and below ground structures; and
2. Authorize the General Manager to issue change orders for any construction contract awarded
for this project in an amount not to exceed 25% of the original contract amount.
BACKGROUND:
The project will install approximately 560 feet of new conduit and 12 kV cable in addition to installing two
Buried Underground Residential Distribution (BURR) transformers to relieve low voltage and improve
system conditions in the Houghton Avenue and Pine Street area.
Change order authorization up to 25% is requested due to the fact that the developed area is over 104
years old and there are very few records of facilities (gas, phone, sewer). As a result, there is a strong
possibility that unknown underground interferences or conditions will be encountered.
Riverside Public Utilities staff has completed engineering and contract forces will perform construction.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The total project cost is estimated at $160,000. Funds are budgeted and available for this project in the
Cable Replacement Acct No. 6130000-470635.
Prepared by: Stephen H.
