RIVERSIDE PUBLIC UTILITIES
W& Board Memorandum
PUBLIC UTILITIES
BOARD OF PUBLIC UTILITIES DATE: February 3, 2012
ITEM NO: 5
SUBJECT: REMOVE AND REPLACE EXISTING FLUTED STEEL STREETLIGHT STANDARDS
—WORK ORDER NO. 1202299
ISSUE:
That the Board of Public Utilities consider approval of Work Order No. 1202299.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of Public Utilities approve the estimated capital expenditure of $97,287 for Work Order
No. 1202299 to remove the existing steel streetlight standards with overhead conductors and replace
with concrete streetlights with underground conduit and cable.
BACKGROUND:
As the City of Riverside annexes surrounding areas, the electrical distribution infrastructure within the
annexed area is transferred to the Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) distribution system. Many of the
streetlights that are located in these annexed areas were formerly part of SCE's system and include
fluted steel pole streetlights installed on footings that were served with overhead conductors. Recently,
the last fluted steel pole in RPU's stock was used. Pole manufacturers no longer support fluted steel
replacement poles that fit on the existing anchors found in various areas of the City of Riverside.
Public Works is improving sidewalks on Dorset, Layton and Wallingham Drives. Coincident with these
improvements, RPU proposes to remove nine of the existing fluted steel poles in this area and re-use
them as stock for future annexed areas as noted above. The fluted steel poles would be replaced by
installing nine new concrete streetlight standards along with the associated cable, conduit and secondary
risers, and a new 25 KVA transformer.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The capital expenditure for the entire project is estimated to be $97,287 and includes all construction,
contingencies, construction management, inspection and design as summarized in the following table:
% of Total
Construction-Street Lighting Conduit & Structures $76,028 78.1%
Construction-Street Lighting OH & UG $4,718 4.8%
Design, Construction Management, Inspection $7,697 7.9%
Contingency 10% $8,844 9.2%
Subtotal: $97,287 100%
Sufficient funds are available for this project in the Major Street Lighting Project Account No. 6130000-
470637.
