1 RESOLUTION NO. 19233 <br />2 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br /> RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF SOUTHERN <br />3 CALIFORNIA REGIONAL RAIL AUTHORITY FUNDING REQUESTS <br /> TO THE CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION IN 1998 <br />5 WHEREAS, Metrolink, the passenger rail system operated by <br />6 the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, began operation <br />7 on October 26, 1992 with 24 daily trains serving 11 stations on <br />8 three lines; <br />9 WHEREAS, Metrolink has added on average a new train <br />10 station and 10 miles of railroad line every two months of its <br />11 existence and today carries over 27,000 riders between 46 <br />12 stations along 416 miles of track in the counties of Los Angeles, <br />13 Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and San Diego; <br />14 WHEREAS, Metrolink provides a convenient means of <br />15 transportation for residents throughout the region, reduces <br />16 gridlock, improves air quality; and <br />17 WHEREAS, Metrolink removes more than 15,250 automobile <br />18 trips per day and removes 8.5 percent of freeway traffic on <br />19 parallel highways; and <br />20 WHEREAS, additional funding is necessary to continue the <br />21 rapid expansion of the system to meet the needs of current and <br />22 future passengers; <br />23 WHEREAS, the Senate of the State of California passed <br />24 Senate Bill 45 in 1997 restructuring the funding of <br />25 transportation projects and creating the Interregional 10% <br />26 Program and the Regional Choice Program; <br />27 WHEREAS, Metrolink is asking that a request for funding <br />Attorney's O~ce <br />Street <br />CA 92~2 <br />782-5567 <br /> F:~WPDATA~RES~98020601.CC <br /> <br /> <br />
