<br /> SUBJECT: AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING
<br /> CHAPTER 2.08 OF THE RIVERSIDE MUNICIPAL CODE REGARDING THE
<br /> ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES AND DEPARTMENTS OF THE CITY
<br /> ISSUE:
<br /> The issue for City Council consideration is adoption on an ordinance to amend Chapter 2.08 of
<br /> the Riverside Municipal Code to rename the Information Technology Department to the
<br /> Innovation and Technology Department.
<br /> RECOMMENDATION:
<br /> That the City Council adopt the attached ordinance (Attachment A) to amend Chapter 2.08.020 of
<br /> the Riverside Municipal Code regarding the administrative offices and departments of the City by
<br /> renaming the Information Technology Department to the Innovation and Technology Department.
<br /> BACKGROUND:
<br /> On November 13, 2012, the City Council approved several updates to the Master Fringe Benefits
<br /> and Salary Resolution. One of those changes was to formally change the name of the Chief
<br /> Information Officer to the Chief Innovation Officer.
<br /> Other cities around the country have information technology departments that incorporate
<br /> innovation in the title of the department:
<br /> • City of Chicago (IL) — Department of Innovation and Technology
<br /> • City of Boston (MA) — Department of Innovation and Technology
<br /> • City of New Orleans (LA) — Office of Information Technology and Innovation
<br /> • City of Tampa (FL) — Technology and Innovation Department
<br /> • City of Philadelphia (PA)— Office of Innovation and Technology
<br /> • City of Redlands (CA)— Department of Innovation and Technology
<br /> Riverside's excellence in high technology, workforce development, digital inclusion, arts,
<br /> innovation, collaboration, and social capital resulted in the City being named the 2012 Intelligent
<br /> Community of the Year. Over the past seven years the City of Riverside has been recognized six
<br /> times by the Center for Digital Government as having one of the country's top ten websites, four
<br /> times by the Municipal Information Systems Association for outstanding information technology
