Trujillo Adobe *Page 2
Current Location and Condition
Located on the northwest corner of Center and Orange Street, the property includes the remains
of the original adobe structure and recently constructed metal storage garage. While the site is
currently owned by the County of Riverside, the property boundaries are configured within the City
limits of Riverside and Colton in the Counties of Riverside and San Bernardino respectively. The
remaining foundation, interior/ exterior walls of the adobe house are enclosed by a wooden framed
structure and roof enclosure. The Adobe structure does not have a roof, only partial window
framing, no discernible interior rooms, and a single deteriorating doorway. The structure's
northerly wall is almost entirely absent. The structure constructed to hold the historic site
designation plaque is also enclosed in a wooden framed enclosure. The property is located in a
large industrial business zone.
RMM Historic Evaluation
According to the RMM collections policy for stewardship of historic sites, a proposed historic site
should meet, at a minimum, the criteria specified by the National Register of Historic Places for
historic significance, financial sustainability, suitability, accessibility and consistency with the
mission of the RMM.
Historical Significance
The proposed historic site must represent the quality of significance in American history,
architecture, archeology, engineering and culture present in districts, sites, buildings, structures
and objects that possess integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and
association and demonstrate that it:
(a) is associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of
our history; or
(b) is associated with the lives of persons significant in our past; or
(c) embodies distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or that
represent the work of a master, or that possess high artistic values, or that represent a
significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual distinction; or
(d) has yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important in prehistory or history.
While the Adobe is associated with a community that made important contributions to the history of
the Riverside area, the current site has compromised location, design, setting, materials and
workmanship.
Financial sustainabili
The proposed historic site should: 1) have a substantial endowment in place including a viable
level of commitment of local and general public support and /or a viable financial sustainability plan;
2) be capable of efficient administration and management at a reasonable cost; and 3) have
minimal costs to be incurred including, but not limited to, the acquisition, development,
preservation, operation and staffing requirements. Financial sustainability will also take into
account the ability of acquiring management /stewardship entity to undertake new responsibilities
in light of current and projected availability of funding and personnel.
The RMM is unable to undertake new management and stewardship responsibilities of the Adobe
site given the current and projected availability of funding and personnel, both of which would be
required for the reconstruction, preservation, research, interpretation and continuous operation as
an historic site.
C6
•
