CITY OF
IZIVEIZSIDE
City Council Memorandum
City of,Arts & Innovation
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL DATE: MARCH 20, 2012
FROM: PARKS, RECREATION AND COMMUNITY ITEM NO: 30
SERVICES DEPARTMENT
WARD: 4
SUBJECT: SEIZING OUR DESTINY — MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH
RIVERSIDE COUNTY REGIONAL PARK AND OPEN -SPACE DISTRICT
REGARDING JOINT ACQUISITION OF SEVEN -MILE TRAIL TRAIL /LINEAR
PARK IN BOX SPRINGS CORRIDOR
ISSUE:
The issue for City Council consideration is approval of a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) with Riverside County Regional Park and Open -Space District regarding joint
acquisition of seven -mile trail /Linear Park in Box Springs Corridor.
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council approve the attached MOU with Riverside County Regional Park and
Open -Space District regarding joint acquisition of seven -mile trail /linear park in Box Springs
Corridor.
BACKGROUND
The City has an opportunity to acquire property designated for use as trail /linear park. Parks,
trails and open space add value to a community in a variety of ways. Green spaces, healthy
trees and plant life soften urban development and add visual enhancements to a city. Park
facilities enable residents to become active and engaged in a variety of recreation activities
and outdoor pursuits for a healthier lifestyle. Acquiring additional trail space would advance
the goal of three acres /1,000 population.
The Box Springs Corridor property is a seven -mile stretch of land currently owned by the
Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MVVD) that connects City and County areas
and extends from near Alessandro Boulevard and Trautwein Road in the City to just beyond
McAllister Street in unincorporated Riverside County. This property is ideally suited as a trail
and is unofficially functioning as such in certain areas. The goal is that a partnership among
MWD, the City, and the County can be achieved in order to eventually develop this property as
a first -rate primary trail that serves the residents of this area by providing a great way to
experience the outdoors in an urban setting.
30 -1
