SUBJECT: DESIGNATION OF SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 2013 AS BOBBY BONDS DAY
ISSUE
The issue for City Council consideration is whether to support the designation of Saturday, August
24, 2013 as Bobby Bonds Day.
RECOMMENDATIONS
That the City Council:
1. Designate Saturday, August 24, 2013 as Bobby Bonds Day; and
2. Approve the use of Bobby Bonds Park for a one -day celebration honoring the life and
accomplishments of native son Bobby Bonds.
BACKGROUND
In June 1976, the City Council approved the naming of Bobby Bonds Sports Park honoring
the accomplishments of native son Bobby Bonds. Bobby Bonds was born in Riverside on
March 15, 1946; attended Poly High School where he excelled in sports; and was later signed by
the San Francisco Giants in 1964 and played in the major leagues until he retired in 1981. In his
debut game in 1968, Bobby hit a grand slam; no first -time player had hit a grand slam in a debut
game since 1898.
Bobby Bonds set a record over five seasons having 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases and was
selected to play in the Baseball All Stars in 1971, 1973 and 1975. He was also awarded the
Golden Glove Award in 1971, 1973 and 1974. Bobby Bonds ended his career with a 0.268 batting
average and 332 home runs. He was and continues to be a positive role model for the youth of
Riverside.
Staff will work with the family and committee to advise them of sponsorship and permitting process
necessary to plan and execute a successful celebration.
