The relevant portion of the section reads, "If any member of a board or commission
absents himself/herself from three consecutive regular meetings of such board or commission,
unless by permission of such board or commission expressed in its official minutes, ... the office
shall become vacant and shall be so declared by the City Council."
It is my opinion that any board or commission member who misses 25% or more of the regular
meetings of their respective board or commission in any running 12 month period should lose
their appointment. The reality is that a board or commission member who is unable or unwilling
to attend 75% of the meetings of their body is not providing good representation of the
community and is not adequately advising the City Council. I would make an exception for a
board or commission member who has a specific, one time, cause for their absence such as a
major health issue. I suggest the Charter Review Commission consider this and make a
recommendation as the Commission feels appropriate.
Thank you for your consideration.
Mike Gardner
Ward 1 Councilmember
7
