City Council Memorandum
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCILDATE: August 9, 2011
FROM: FIRE DEPARTMENT ITEM NO:
WARD: All
SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF A VEHICLE DONATION FROM BMW OF RIVERSIDE TO
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR VEHICLE EXTRICATION TRAINING
ISSUE:
The issue for City Council consideration is whether to accept the donation of a 2001 BMW model
325i sedan from BMW of Riverside, for use by the Fire Department in vehicle extrication training.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
That the City Council accept the donation by BMW of Riverside of a 2001 325i sedan (white/tan,
VIN: WBAAV33451FU97497) for vehicle extrication training.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Riverside Fire Department responds to a full range of emergency incidents, including
traffic collisions within Riverside city limits. Depending on the severity of the collision, it can be
necessary to perform vehicle extrication, whereby the damaged vehicle is cut away from around a
person(s) when conventional means of exit are impossible or may result in further injury to the
victim(s). In order to maintain a constant state of readiness to manage this type of rescue, the Fire
Department conducts hands-on training to familiarize firefighters with the variety of extrication tools,
including the Jaws of Life, utilized on vehicle extrication incidents. Through the generosity of BMW
of Riverside, the Fire Department has been offered at no cost a 2001 BMW 325i sedan for this
express purpose. City Council acceptance of this donated vehicle will enhance public safety by
providing our firefighters with an opportunity to conduct critical extrication skills training without
costs for outside training or travel.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The vehicle has an estimated Blue Book value of $7,600. There is no cost to the Fire Department
associated with acceptance of the vehicle for training purposes.
