IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII. 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111IIII. 111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111. 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII 111111111111111111111111111111111111111 ���������� ��� <br />TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL DATE: August 9, 2011 <br />FROM: PUBLIC UTILITIES DEPARTMENT ITEM NO: 15 <br />WARDS: ALL <br />SUBJECT: SEIZING OUR DESTINY - THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE <br />PROPOSAL FOR A RIVERSIDE PUBLIC UTILITIES' ENERGY INNOVATIONS <br />GRANT <br />ISSUE <br />The issue for City Council consideration is <br />California Riverside (UCR) for a grant in the <br />efficient, miniaturized energy- storage devices. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />approval of an agreement with the University of <br />amount of $99,000 to fund research on designing <br />That the City Council approve an Agreement with UCR for an Energy Innovations Grant in the <br />amount of $99,000 for FY 2011 -12 to research designing miniaturized, efficient and low -cost energy <br />storage devices. <br />BOARD RECOMMENDATION <br />On July 1, 2011, the Board of the Public Utilities unanimously approved this item. <br />LAND USE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION <br />On July 18, 2011, the Utility Services /Land Use /Energy Development Committee unanimously <br />approved and recommended that the City Council approve this item. <br />BACKGROUND <br />One of Riverside Public Utilities' (RPU) programs funded from the Public Benefits Funds is the <br />Energy Innovations Grant (EIG) Program. This Program was developed forthe funding of research, <br />development, and demonstration programs forthe public interestto advance science ortechnology <br />in electric related projects in the institutions of higher education within the City of Riverside. <br />Participation in the EIG Program is restricted to public or private post- secondary institutions whose <br />primary activities fall within the City limits. The grant funds must comply with the relevant portions <br />of California Public Utilities Code (PUC) Section 385 related to the use of Public Benefits Funds. <br />15 -1 <br />
