úÔÉÄúÎÈÏÚÔÑðØÐÎËÜÏÙÈÐ TO: HONORABLE MAYO R AND CITY COUNCIL DATE: July 14, 2009 FROM: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT ITEM NO: îî PLANNING DIVISION WARDS: ALL SUBJECT: AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION – INLAND EMPIRE SECTION DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD- PLANNING FIRM, DEPARTMENT OR AGENCY ISSUE: The Inland Empire Section of the American Planning Association has recently announced that the City of Riverside Planning Division has receiv ed the 2009 Distinguished Leadership Award for a Planning Firm, Department or Agency. RECOMMENDATIONS : That the City Council: 1. Recognize the leadership contributions of the Planning Division of the Community Development Department; and 2. Receive and file this report. COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION : On May 14, 2009, the Land Use Committee received and filed this report. BACKGROUND: Attached is a letter from the Inland Empire Section of the American Planning Association (IES-APA) congratulating the Planning Division as the recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Leadership Award for a Planning Firm, Department or Agency. The award was officially presented at the annual Awards Program on May 20, 2009. The Planning Division has a long and deserved reputation for distinguished leadership in the Inland Empire. It is known for its innovation and high standards. In the past th ree years alone, the Planning Division (staff and projects) has received seven awards from IES-APA, two awards from the California Chapter of APA and a SCAG Compass Blueprint Award. The Planning Division has provided fair and objective guidance to decision makers and applicants alike. The Planning Division understands its role as a facilitator, not just as a regulator. In addition to their work with the City of Riverside, planners have a longstanding history of leadership in the IES-APA and regional planning circles.
